Description of Duties

This is a supervisory professional nursing position responsible for developing and ensuring the provision of nursing services, and supervising nursing practices to assure safe, effective and efficient, comprehensive nursing care in homes, clinics, and other community facilities. This position differs from the lower, Public Health Nurse by its responsibility for program coordination and monitoring, as well as administrative responsibilities such as staff development. The employee reports directly to and works under the general supervision of an administrative level staff member. General supervision is exercised over public health care professionals and nursing staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements on or before the date of the written exam:
Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Nursing, plus EITHER:

(A) Two (2) years of paid full-time or its part-time equivalent* nursing experience in community health or preventative health in a federal, state, or local health agency or in a diagnostic treatment center, health maintenance organization, home health agency, long-term home health care program, or large public health nursing program, one (1) year of which shall have involved supervisory experience as a public or community health nurse who served as a team leader or coordinator of a program component involving supervision of professional nurses; OR,

(B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Master's degree in Nursing, Health Education, Community Health, or Public Administration, or related field, plus one (1) year of paid full-time or its part-time equivalent* nursing experience in community health or preventative health in a federal, state, or local health agency or in a diagnostic treatment center, health maintenance organization, home health agency, long-term home health care program, or large public health nursing program, that also involved supervisory experience as a public or community health nurse who served as a team leader or coordinator of a program component involving supervision of professional nurses; OR,

(C) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.

Special Requirements:
Possession of a New York State license as a Registered Professional Nurse at the time of appointment.
