Description of Duties

This is an entry-level position responsible for assisting engineers and sanitarians in the performance of specialized
environmental health activities, including field inspections and investigations, while undergoing on-the-job training. The
employee reports directly to and works under the direct supervision of senior-level engineers and sanitarians, and work is
performed in accordance with local and state Public Health Laws and Sanitary Codes. Trainee appointments are for a period
of one (1) year, following which incumbents receiving satisfactory ratings and completing the Basic Environmental Health
Course* approved by the New York State Department of Health will be advanced to the title of Public Health Sanitarian without
further examination. Incumbents who do not successfully complete the one year training period, or who fail to complete the
Basic Environmental Health Course within the stated time frame will be removed from the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree including or supplemented by the satisfactory completion of thirty (30) college semester credit hours** in the natural sciences***, of which not more than twelve (12) credit hours may be in the applied sciences****.

**A student or official transcript is required at time of application.

***The term natural science shall mean a science such as biology, chemistry or physics that deals with the objects, phenomena, or laws of nature and the physical world. It shall include all physical and biological sciences.

****The term applied science shall mean science based on courses in environmental technology, sanitation technology, medical technology, public health, infection control or food science.
