Traffic Engineer

Description of Duties
This is a professional engineering position in the Monroe County Department of Transportation responsible for analyzing
traffic signal, highway lighting and other traffic operations, conducting traffic studies to determine traffic control needs and
priorities, and creating plans and specifications. This position differs from Senior Traffic Engineer by the lack of supervisory
duties and performing less complex design work. The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision
of, a higher level engineer or administrator.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus EITHER:
(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Master’s or
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Technology, Construction Management, Electrical Engineering or a
closely related field plus one (1) year paid full-time or its part-time equivalent** experience in traffic engineering*;
OR,
(B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s
degree in one of the fields mentioned in (A) above, plus three (3) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent**
engineering experience, two (2) years of which must have involved traffic engineering*; OR,
(C) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
*NOTE: Traffic engineering experience must include work in traffic signal design and operations, traffic design of pavement
markings and signs, traffic studies, and/or highway design.
