Description of Duties

This position, located at the Monroe County Children’s Detention Center (a Specialized/Secure Detention facility), is responsible for responding to emergency situations involving sixteen (16) and seventeen (17) year old residents requiring de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques due to possible suicide threats, mental hygiene issues, the exhibition of behavior indicating possible self-harm thoughts and actions and other concerns requiring immediate responses and at times physically restraint.  Duties are performed in accordance with the guidelines of the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) and the Commission of Corrections (COC) and involve the physical restraint of youth when required.  Duties also involve providing support and additional resident supervision throughout the housing units, as well as providing security.  This position is mandated by Title 9 New York Codes, Rules and Regulations (NYCRR) Subpart 180.  The employee reports directly to and works under the general supervision of a Supervising Youth Detention Worker or other higher- level staff member.  Does related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER:

(A)  Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's or Associate’s degree plus one (1) year paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience with youth (aged ten [10] through twenty-one [21]) with behavioral and emotional disorders; or providing custodial supervision in a juvenile institution or facility; or in law enforcement; OR

(B) Three (3) years paid full time or its part time equivalent experience as defined in (A) above; OR,

(C) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
