Description of Duties

This is a senior-level technical position responsible for coordinating and monitoring the implementation of various Geographic Information System (GIS) projects and monitoring GIS related activities in a municipality.  Duties include performing field work, and working in various weather conditions and on uneven terrain.  This position differs from Geographic Information Systems Analyst in the increased complexity and broader scope of work such as the coordination of projects and prioritizing work.  The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of a Manager of Operations – GIS or other higher level staff member with leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgement and decision making.  General supervision may be exercised over a subordinate staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus EITHER:

  1. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Master’s degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geography, Planning, Civil Technology, Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, one of the Natural Sciences, or a Computer Science field, plus one (1) year paid full-time or its part-time equivalent* experience working with data and information analysis in either: planning, physical services or an engineering field which must have involved using a Geographic Information System for data development and spatial analysis; OR,
  1. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geography, Planning, Civil Technology, Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, one of the Natural Sciences, or a Computer Science field, plus two (2) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent* experience working with data and information analysis in either: planning, physical services or an engineering field, at least one (1) year of which shall have involved using a Geographic Information System for data development and spatial analysis; OR,
  1. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Certificate in Geographic Information Systems or an Associate's degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geography, Planning, Civil Technology, Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, one of the Natural Sciences, or a Computer Science field, plus four (4) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent* experience working with data and information analysis in either: planning, physical services or an engineering field, at least one (1) year of which shall have involved using a Geographic Information System for data development and spatial analysis; OR,
  1. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s, Bachelor’s or Master’s degree plus five (5) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent* experience working with data and information analysis in either: planning, physical services or an engineering field, at least one (1) year of which shall have involved using a Geographic Information System for data development and spatial analysis; OR,
  1. An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), (C) and (D) above.
