Description of Duties

This is a high level technical position located in the Department of Public Health, Medical Examiner’s Office responsible for assisting the Chief Toxicologist in directing the operations of the American Board of Forensic Toxicology (ABFT) accredited regional forensic toxicology laboratory and ensuring required laboratory analysis tasks are performed in a timely manner.  Duties involve being responsible for the operational readiness of the laboratory as it relates to environment, equipment and supplies and independent decision making that are consistent with generally acceptable laboratory practices.  This position acts for and in place of the Chief Toxicologist in his/her absence and oversees the work of the Toxicology Laboratory Supervisor.  The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of the Chief Toxicologist or other higher level staff member. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus EITHER:

(A)   Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Master’s degree in Chemistry, Pharmacology, Toxicology or a closely related field, plus two (2) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent* laboratory experience in forensic toxicology which must have included ALL of the following: headspace gas chromatography, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS), and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS; OR,

(B)   Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Pharmacology, or Toxicology; OR,

(C)   An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
