Description of Duties

This position in the Department of Environmental Services involves supervision of a technical staff in performing household hazardous waste collections, conducting commercial inspections for compliance with proper disposal of commercial waste products or Best Management Practices (BMP’s), developing pollution prevention programs for small commercial businesses, and coordinating storm water management plans and stream monitoring.  Employees are responsible for 24‑hour emergency call situations in the event of a chemical spill to the sewer system.  The employee reports directly to and works under the general supervision of the Pretreatment Coordinator or other higher staff member.  General supervision is exercised over a technical staff

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, plus EITHER:

(A)        Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree in the natural or physical sciences, Civil, Chemical or Sanitary Engineering, Public or Environmental Health, or any type of laboratory technology field, plus two (2) years of paid full‑time or its part‑time equivalent* experience in hazardous waste management that includes all of the following: disposal of hazardous waste, interpreting regulatory requirements, and contracting with outside agencies for the disposal of hazardous waste for municipal, industrial, or private sector; OR in industrial waste control or water or wastewater treatment; OR,

(B)        Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate's degree in one of the above fields, plus four (4) years of paid full‑time or its part‑time equivalent* experience as described in (A) above; OR,

(C)        Any equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.

Special Requirements:
Must pass a HazMat physical examination within six (6) months of appointment or have passed a HazMat physical examination within the past twelve (12) months prior to appointment.
