Description of Duties

This position is responsible for assisting the Fire Marshall/Building Inspector with building and fire inspection and code enforcement activities.  Duties include participating in the inspection activities of buildings, issuance of building permits, and the enforcement of international, state and municipal building and fire codes.  The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of a Fire Marshall/Building Inspector or other higher-level staff member.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, PLUS either:

  1.    Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Construction Technology, Fire Science, Fire Protection Technology or a closely related field; OR,
  1.    Two (2) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent*** experience performing fire or building inspection activities; OR,
  1.    Two (2) years experience as a volunteer* or career (paid) Firefighter, plus one (1) year paid full-time or its part-time    equivalent*** experience in one of the building trades; OR,
  1.    Possession of a valid New York State Basic Code Enforcement Training Certificate indicating successful completion of the New York State Basic Code Enforcement Program**; OR,
  1.    An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), (C) and (D) above.           

*volunteer firefighter experience, for the purposes of these minimum qualifications, is defined as actual time spent in emergency services training, attending official department functions, or in responding to emergency situations as a firefighter.  Time spent in fund-raising, parades, or social or sporting events will not be credited.  The time claimed must be verified by a letter from the department chief/director.
