Description of Duties

This is an entry-level technical position in the Department of Transportation responsible for assisting engineering and higher-level technical staff in performing field and office investigative and survey work.  This title differs from the Senior Traffic Engineering Technician by its emphasis on data collecting and recording and its limited responsibility for the analysis and recommendations placed on that data.  The employee reports directly to and works under the general supervision of a Principal or Senior Traffic Engineering Technician.  Does related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER:

(A)  Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate's degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering Technology or Engineering Science; OR,

(B)  Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate's degree plus two (2) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent professional experience in EITHER:  traffic sign installation, traffic sign fabrication, pavement markings, field or office traffic engineering work, or other civil, electrical or engineering work; OR,

(C)  Four (4) years of paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience as defined in (B) above; OR,

(D)  Two (2) years of paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in inspection of construction and/or repair of roads and bridges in a traffic engineering capacity**; OR,

(E)  Possession of Certification by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) as a level I in Transportation Engineering Technology***; OR,

(F)   Any equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B) (C) and (D) above.

**Traffic Engineering capacity is defined as any one, or combination of, the following experience:  traffic engineering studies, traffic engineering analysis, and traffic features design such as signs, signals, and pavement marking.

***Candidates qualifying under option E must submit a copy of their certificate with their application.
