Description of Duties

This position is responsible for providing non-clinical medical social work services to patients* and their families in a health care facility to assist them deal with medically related social and emotional problems. Employees serve as members of interdisciplinary health care teams involving medicine, nursing, dietary, rehabilitation therapies and activities personnel in identifying needs and in formulating and implementing the restorative and discharge potential of patients. The work is performed within prescribed guidelines with leeway permitted in determining the scope of social work services to be provided in helping patients adjust to their medical condition and to the environment of the facility. Medical Caseworkers consult and cooperate with professionals in other disciplines and agencies to aid them in recognizing the significant social components of health care and understanding their impact on patients and their families. Psychotherapy is not a responsibility of this position. The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of a Medical Social Work Manager or other higher-level staff member.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus EITHER:
 
(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Social Work or other behavioral science** field except Criminal Justice and Anthropology, plus two (2) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent*** experience performing social work or casework activities with a public or private organization, at least one (1) year of which must have been in the medical field; OR,
 
(B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Master's degree in Social Work; OR,
 
(C) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
 
*The term "patient" should be changed to "resident" when position is used in health related facilities.
 
**Behavioral science includes, but is not limited to, Psychology, Sociology, Counseling, Gerontology, Human Behavior, Social Welfare, Vocational Rehabilitation.
