Description of Duties

This position in the Monroe County Parks Department Seneca Park Zoo is responsible for assisting with monitoring the animal collection to ensure a balanced and diverse collection.  Duties involve developing proper methods of caring for the animal collection at the zoo on a daily basis.  The employee provides care for assigned animals as needed.  The employee reports directly to and works under the general supervision of the General Curator or a higher-level staff member.  General supervision is exercised over a subordinate staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus EITHER:

(A)       Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Zoology, Animal Science, Conservation Biology, Wildlife management, or a closely related field, plus one (1) year paid full-time or its part-time equivalent*** experience working with animal collections or animal exhibits including responsibility for the care, feeding and observation of zoo animals and the upkeep and maintenance of zoo property in an accredited Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) facility *, one (1) year of which must have involved experience in a lead supervisory capacity** or higher; OR,

(B)       Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s degree in one of the fields mentioned in (A) above, plus three (3) years experience as described in (A) above, one (1) year of which must have involved experience in a lead supervisory capacity** or higher; OR,

(C)       Five (5) years experience as described in (A) above, one (1) year of which must have involved experience in a lead supervisory capacity** or higher; OR,

(D)       Any equivalent combination of training and experience defined by the limits of (A), (B) and (C) above.

**Lead supervisory capacity, for the purposes of these minimum qualifications, is defined as someone who participates in and oversees projects, or directs and coordinates the work of others.
