Description of Duties
This position, in the Department of Parks, Seneca Park Zoo, is responsible for the care and feeding of zoo animals. This position is distinguished from Zookeeper in that the incumbent has responsibility for a broad area of researching and studying the animal collection and making recommendations on management systems. Work is performed both inside and outside zoo buildings in a variety of weather conditions including heat, cold, high humidity, rain and snow. Employees are exposed to the hazards and diseases of the zoological animal collection as a routine part of their duties. The work involves moving items weighing a maximum of forty (40) pounds. Employees may be required to work a varying schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays. The employee reports directly to and works under the general supervision of a higher level staff member. Direct supervision may be exercised over subordinate staff.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must be permanently employed in the non-competitive class in the Monroe County Department of Parks and must have served continuously on a permanent basis for twenty-four (24) months holding the position of Elephant Handler or Zookeeper immediately preceding the date of the written test.
A combination of time served in multiple titles sufficient to meet the maximum period of required service is also qualifying.
