Description of Duties

This position in the Department of Public Health, Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program, is responsible for coordinating the day‑to‑day operation of the Enhanced Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Pilot Program.  The program is designed to support women who are thinking about, or are currently breastfeeding.  General supervision is exercised over a staff of peer counselors who are responsible for counseling and encouraging women in the community to breastfeed.  The employee reports directly to and works under the general supervision of, an administrative-level staff member.  Does related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER:

(A)  Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s degree (or 60 college credits) in a nutrition or public health related field**; plus one (1) year full-time paid or its part time or volunteer*** equivalent experience working with lactating mothers; OR,

(B)  Three (3) years of experience as defined in (A); OR,

(C)  Any equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.

**A public health related field is one concerned with the art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting physical and mental health through organized community efforts for the sanitation of the environment, the control of community infections, the education of the individual in principles of personal hygiene, the organization of medical and nursing service for the early diagnosis and preventive treatment of disease.
