Description of Duties

This position, in the Department of Parks, Seneca Park Zoo, is responsible for the care and feeding of zoo animals, and the upkeep and maintenance of zoo property. This position is distinguished from Zookeeper in that the incumbent has responsibility for a broad area of researching and studying the animal collection and making recommendations on management systems. Work is performed both inside and outside zoo buildings in a variety of weather conditions including heat, cold, high humidity, rain and snow. Employees are exposed to the hazards and diseases of the zoological animal collection as a routine part of their duties. The work involves moving items weighing a maximum of forty (40) pounds. Employees may be required to work a varying schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays. The employee reports directly to and works under the general supervision of a higher level staff member. Direct supervision may be exercised over subordinate staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus EITHER:

(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s degree in Biology, Zoology, Conservation Biology, Wildlife Management, Animal Science, or a closely related field, plus two (2) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent* experience as a Zookeeper in an accredited Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) facility caring for a wide variety of exotic animals; OR,

(B) Four (4) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent* experience caring for animals in a setting such as an Animal Hospital, Zoo, wildlife refuge, sanctuary, as a Veterinarian Technician, or other environments/positions devoted to animal care; OR,

(C) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
