Description of Duties

This is an entry-level position in the Parks Department, Seneca Park Zoo responsible for assisting in the day-to-day routine operation of the Zoo’s water exhibit’s life support systems. Work involves assisting with the maintenance and monitoring of filtration systems, pumps, motors, valves, gear boxes and other associated mechanical equipment. Work also involves taking water samples and maintaining routine water chemistry and recording data. This classification differs from the higher, Aquatic Life Support Systems Operator, in that the latter has a broader scope and holds accountability for the operation as well as performing more complex duties. The employee must be on call for emergencies and may work shifts. The employee reports directly to and works under the general supervision of a higher level staff member.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER:

(A) Two (2) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent*** experience in one of the electrical, mechanical or construction trades or in wastewater treatment, or mechanical maintenance*; OR,

(B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate's degree in Biology or other natural science**; OR

(C) An equivalent combination of education and experience as described by the limits of (A) and (B) above.

*Mechanical maintenance experience includes, but is not limited to, automotive, hydraulics, pneumatics, Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), power transmission and millwright

**Natural Science (Physical and Biological) includes Biology, Biochemistry, Botany, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics, and Zoology.
