Description of Duties

This is a supervisory-level professional position involving responsibility for supervising the performance of environmental health
and sanitary inspections and investigations, and for participating in the more complex and difficult inspections and investigations.
Employees assist higher-level public health sanitarians and engineers in planning, directing and coordinating environmental
health programs. This classification differs from the lower, Senior Public Health Sanitarian, by virtue of its responsibility for the
supervision and enforcement of laws, codes, and local ordinances. The employee reports directly to, and works under the
general supervision of, the Principal Public Health Sanitarian, Associate Public Health Engineer or Principal Public Health
Engineer. General supervision is exercised over Senior Public Health Sanitarians and other departmental personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree, with thirty (30) semester credit hours* in the natural sciences**, of which not more than twelve (12) credit hours may be in the applied sciences*** plus EITHER:

(A) Two (2) years of paid full time or its part-time equivalent***** experience as a Senior Public Health Sanitarian plus successful completion of the Basic Environmental Health Course (public health training course)**** approved by the New York State Department of Health; OR,

(B) Five (5) years of paid full time or its part time equivalent***** experience in the performance of environmental health and sanitarian activities in a New York State health agency, two (2) years of which must have been performed independently, and two (2) years of which must have involved assisting in the planning, directing, and implementing of public health sanitarian programs, plus successful completion of the Basic Environmental Health Course (public health training course)**** approved by the New York State Department of Health.

*A student or official transcript is required at the time of application.

**The term natural science shall mean a science such as biology, chemistry or physics that deals with the objects, phenomena, or laws of nature and the physical world. It shall include all physical and biological sciences.

***The term applied science shall mean science-based courses in environmental technology, sanitation technology, medical technology, public health, infection control or food science.

****Proof of successful completion of a training course must be submitted at the time of application by candidates qualifying under (A) and (B) above
