Description of Duties

This is a trainee-level probation officer position for college graduates with a career interest in probation. Employees are
required to interpret information and communicate both in Spanish and English. Employees receive on-the-job training
while performing duties of a limited professional nature under close and continuing supervision. Employees may be
armed during the performance of duties. Trainee appointments are for a period of two (2) years following which
employees receiving satisfactory ratings will be advanced to the title of Probation Officer without further examination.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements on or before the date of the written exam:
Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university, or one recognized by the New York State Education Department, with at least thirty (30) credit hours in the social or behavioral sciences*.

*Candidates must submit a student or official college transcript(s) or itemized list of course work and credits received, at the time of application.

Note: The Minimum Qualifications are regulated by the New York State Office of Probation and Correctional Alternatives-Division of Criminal Justice Services (Appendix H-10 of the regulations).
