Description of Duties

This is a professional entry-level probation officer position responsible for conducting evaluations and investigations and providing supervision of persons within the jurisdiction of the courts. Duties include investigation of records, supervision of persons on probation, making recommendations to the court, and preparing written reports and records. The employee assists persons on probation and others whom the agency serves and may be armed during the performance of duties. The employee reports directly to and works under the general supervision of a higher ranking staff member.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be permanently employed in the competitive class in the Monroe County Department of Public Safety and served continuously on a permanent basis for twelve (12) months holding the position of Probation Assistant and must have met the following minimum qualifications of a Probation Officer Trainee*immediately preceding the date of the written test.

*Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university, or one recognized by the New York State Education Department, with at least (30) credit hours in the social or behavioral sciences**.
