Description of Duties

This is a professional position in the medical social work field responsible for developing and implementing projects related to providing non-clinical medical social work services to patients* in a health care facility, and their families. Duties involve determining the scope of social work services to be provided in helping patients adjust to their medical conditions and environment while following prescribed guidelines. Duties also involve providing guidance to Medical Caseworkers on a daily basis, especially with sensitive or complex case issues. This position differs from Medical Caseworker by virtue of providing primary coverage in the absence of the Medical Social Work Manager, assisting with administrative duties such as conducting competency assessments, ensuring employee completion of in-service training and adherence to the New York State Department of Health requirements, and performing quality assurance. Psychotherapy is not an aspect of this position. The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of the Medical Social Work Manager or other higher-level staff member with leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in establishing methods and procedures.

*The term “patient” should be changed to “resident” when position is located in health related facility.
